THE FIRST 100% SINGLE BEDROOM NHS HOSPITAL IN ENGLAND
Pembury Hospital was the first major NHS acute hospital with 100% single patient bedroom accommodation in England.
The design exploits its extraordinary setting in a clearing in the woods, on the south face of a steeply sloping hillside, and the site planning returns much of the existing estate to wooded heathland as part of a wider sustainability strategy.
The design is composed of a series of peninsular wards which reach into and enclose the landscape. Ambulatory, inpatient and staff areas are separated vertically and achieve a very clear and legible plan in which all the circulation takes place in daylight with views of the woods.
The clinical design was developed with space consultants, Intelligent Space and the National Patient Safety Agency to validate both the design principles and medical architecture.
