A FAST TRACK DESIGN – TWENTY WEEKS FROM FORMULATING A BRIEF TO CLINICAL SIGN-OFF
This project addresses many of the issues which are currently under discussion about the scale, location and nature of the hospital as a building type. This new facility will be a key component in the regional ‘Momentum’ project to bring care nearer to home. It will replace the two existing district general hospitals and become the hub of a wider health care network, with many of the services which were traditionally located in hospitals now being provided in community settings.
The design team were appointed at a very early stage and worked with the Trust to formulate a brief and functional content and appraise options for the location of the new hospital. A detailed design was developed with full stakeholder engagement and support and the whole process was completed in 20 weeks.
70% of the clinical area is designed as generic space, planned in a set of shallow floor plates which will provide adaptable and highly flexible accommodation.
This is enabled by moving from traditional shared spaces for patients in all the key departments – ED, Theatres, Critical Care and the wards – to patients being given single rooms or ’cabins’
North Tees was the culmination of a series of projects, led by John Cooper, which Anshen + Allen undertook to develop innovative hospital designs that combined a high quality of patient space with a pleasant and purposeful working environment.
