A HOSPITAL IN THE PARK
The Royal Children’s Hospital is the largest paediatric facility in Australia, combining tertiary and quaternary services with research and teaching. The new hospital is situated in the Royal Park and our scheme for this PPP bid placed the new facility firmly within this landscape behind a screen of trees and grassland.
The design was based around a set of internal and external spaces that linked the clinical areas with play and learning spaces, connecting the hospital with its landscape setting.
The scheme is the most family centred and child friendly design with which we had been involved – a radical solution that failed to win the PPP bid but was nonetheless a wonderful opportunity to test ideas and develop a specific approach to children’s care.
